Turkey Challenge Recap
What an awesome weekend with a bunch of great athletes and outstanding performances. None of which would have been possible without the amazing help of our volunteers and judges! Thank you so much!
Saturday started off with fog and chilly temps, although this would not slow down the athletes. First the men and women heats were to take a tour of Interlocken in a 5k (hill) run. After a quick briefing on the run route, the men shot down the hill. The women followed six minutes later. Ryan Garcia of CrossFit North Fort Collins proved the hill was no match for his speed as he arrived with a time of 18:33. Running amidst the tail-end of the men's heat came Dawn Schwarck of MBS, who also had a time in the mid-18's and gave her first place in the women's division.
Following the run was a small break before the first heat of the CrossFit Total. The only exception to the normal rules of the Total were that athletes were sharing a squat rack and bar with 2-4 other athletes while trying to complete all their lifts within 35 minutes. This proved to be a challenge for both the lifters and the judges, who were expected to do quick math without calculators and mixed weights. Regardless, neither judges or athletes had a complaint. They got the job done. Thoughout event 2, cheers and high fives were had by many who were celebrating personal records. Two of the most impressive performances came from Zach Griffith of MBS who lifted an impressive 1145 pounds to win the overall title in the mens CF Total, and Joylyn Godinez of CrossFit Verve scored the highest women's Total with a strong 665 pounds.
Following the Total was the mysterious Turkey WOD. The only clue athletes had were the 10 ropes hanging above the floor. Here is Matt Hosberg's recollection of the Turkey WOD briefing:
“Competitors waited in anxious anticipation. Unsure if they could even go on after the two previous workouts.. What could be brewing? Then a sign, the enormous hanger doors began to slowly lift, revealing haze wrapped mountains. As the warm sun poured in, the next challenge stood before them. The wall. Like tiny ants, the judges swarmed the wall and lifted with all their might. After minutes, the wall had been moved and installed, ready for use. In stone-cold amazement, the competitors looked on. It was time for some Deep Fried Turkey”.
The final workout, named “Deep Fried Turkey”, was a mix of this year's CrossFit games and a favorite barbell workout. The biggest surprise was the 5-foot tall wall that stretched more than 30 feet across the gym floor. The athletes were tasked with putting the barbell overhead 15 times, touching their chest to the ground and jumping the wall 10 times, and doing up to 5 rope climbs before repeating the wall and barbell work for the finish. To add to the fun, the winter chill was coming in quickly as the sun headed over the mountains. Kevin Montoya of CrossFit Flex Gym had the fastest men's time with 5:38, and Karen Ramirez of MBS had the fastest women's time with 6:34. After 13 heats of amazing performances, we were able to find the toughest Turkey challengers of 2010.
